The Roman Argenteus was a silver coin introduced during the monetary reforms of Emperor Diocletian around 294 to 310 AD to stabilize the Roman economy and restore confidence in the currency. The obverse depicts the head of emperor Diocletian, while the reverse depicts a laurel wreath and the numerals XCVI in reference to the coin's weight: 96 silver coins to the pound, which was Diocletian's reformed currency.
