An airdrop is a marketing strategy where a blockchain project distributes free tokens or coins to the wallets of active members in the crypto community. Named after the military practice of dropping supplies from aircraft, airdrops are often done to promote awareness of a new cryptocurrency and encourage its adoption. One of the largest airdrops in history was by the NEO blockchain, distributing over $40 million worth of ONT tokens in 2018.
