Artemisia I of Caria was the queen of the Anatolian region of Caria and a naval commander known for her role in personally commanding ships at the Battle of Salamis in 480 BC during the Greco-Persian Wars. As an ally of Xerxes I, she fought against the independent Greek city states during the second Persian invasion of Greece and helped secure Persian control over key trade routes.
