Cornelius Vanderbilt was a self-made, 19th-century American business magnate known as "The Commodore" after building his wealth in the steamship business. He later switched his focus to railroads, where he eventually offered the first rail service from New York City to Chicago. In 1873, he donated $1 million to Central University, which subsequently became Vanderbilt University and has the mascot "Mr. Commodore" in a nod to its principal donor.
