Considered the world's first billionaire in measurable currency, John D. Rockefeller was an industrialist who founded Standard Oil Company in 1870 and organized it into the first major corporate trust in 1882. At its peak, Standard Oil controlled over 90% of all oil production in the country. In later years, Rockefeller turned to philanthropic pursuits, donating over $500 million and creating such entities as the University of Chicago in Illinois and the Rockefeller Foundation in New York.
