First conceived in the mid-1800s, a Ponzi scheme, (named after Charles Ponzi) refers to an investment pyramid where early investors are repaid with funds from later investors. The organizers often promise potential investors unusually high returns. However, these ventures are extremely risky, or outright fraudulent, and usually cause later investors to lose most, if not all, of their money.
