Rai (or fei) stones were large limestone discs carved by the inhabitants of Yap Island in the Pacific Ocean. Due to the difficulty of carving and transporting such large objects, the Yap Stones served as a store of wealth and transferable form of money. Many economists have made comparisons between Yap Stones and the gold standard, in addition to sharing many characteristics with Bitcoin.
