Hypatia of Alexandria was a mathematician, lecturer, philosopher, and astronomer. She focused much of her work on preserving Greek mathematical and astronomical heritage during a very turbulent time in Alexandria's history. In 415 AD Hypatia was brutally murdered by followers of Cyril. Hypatia is considered to have been the leading mathematician and astronomer during her lifetime.
