Greenback is a slang term for legal tender paper money that was created by the Union government in the 1860s to help finance the Civil War. The distinctive notes, with their backs printed in green ink, were not backed by gold and thus less desirable than bank notes issued at the time that were (at least theoretically) backed by gold.
