One of the first mechanical cipher machines was invented by Arthur Scherbius, and he later patented and sold it under the brand name Enigma. The Enigma machine, as it was popularly referred to, was originally intended for commercial use but was later adopted by various militaries and governments, most notably Nazi Germany during World War II.
