Cacao beans, the main ingredient for chocolate and tejate, were used as currency by the ancient Mayans and widely exchanged for most goods and services. Due to their high economic value and scarcity, citizens sometimes counterfeited them by painting hardened clay pieces and passing them off as the genuine article.
