Enron was an American energy company that became infamous for one of the largest corporate scandals in history. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2001 after it was revealed that it had engaged in widespread accounting fraud to hide its financial losses. Enron's collapse led to significant changes in corporate governance, accounting practices, and the the Sarbanes-Oxley Act in 2002 designed to protect investors from fraudulent financial reporting by corporations.
