Jacob Beam, an American farmer and miller, began producing whiskey in the style later known as bourbon, forming the foundation for the Jim Beam brand. After moving his family to Kentucky and using excess corn from his farm to produce a sweeter whiskey, Jacob Beam sold his first barrel of "Old Jake Beam Sour Mash" in 1795.
