First introduced by Constantine I in the 4th century CE, the Nomisma was the standard currency of the Byzantine Empire for nearly 700 years. Minted between, the years 976 and 1025 CE, the gold Nomisma of Basil Il depicts an image of Jesus Christ on the obverse and Emperor Basil on the reverse.
