With the first examples having been minted around 512 BCE, the Athenian Tetradrachm was a thick silver coin featuring the head of Athena on the obverse and the owl of Athena on the reverse. Originally referred to as the "little owl, the Athenian Tetradrachm is one of the most recognizable of all ancient coins.
