As far back as the 4th century AD, Chinese imperial rulers began minting round coinage with square center holes. Made out of various metals and alloys, these coins were known as quin or "cash" coins and were in use until as late as the 20th century. Today, cash coins that are 1,000 years old or older are often worn around the necks of individuals as the coins are said to bring good luck.
