Alan Turing was an English Logician credited with numerous breakthroughs in the areas of mathematics, codebreaking, artificial intelligence, and multipurpose computing. Among his many other accomplishments, Turing created the Automatic Computing Engine and decoded the encryption of the German Enigma machines during World War II.
