Bitcoin mining harnesses immense computing power to secure the network and uphold the integrity of the bitcoin transaction ledger. This proof of work process involves specialized computers (ASICs) making trillions of guesses a second to discover a target number, much like a high-stakes lottery. Each successful attempt validates a block of transactions, which is then added to the blockchain, on average every ten minutes. Miners are rewarded with newly minted bitcoins and earn transaction fees, providing an incentive to mine even after the total supply of 21 million bitcoins has been reached. Some operations use flared gas from oil extraction turning waste energy into a useful resource.
