Bitcoin mining harnesses immense computing power to secure the network and uphold the integrity of the bitcoin transaction ledger. This proof of work process involves specialized computers, known as ASICs, making trillions of guesses a second to find a target number, much like a high-stakes lottery. Each successful attempt validates a block of transactions, which is added to the bitcoin blockchain on average every ten minutes. Miners are rewarded with newly minted bitcoins and also earn transaction fees, providing a continuous incentive to mine, even after the total supply of 21 million bitcoins has been reached.
