The Papiermark was the currency in use during a chaotic period of hyperinflation in Germany, which was struggling to pay its war debts after WWI. With rapid money printing, prices rose so quickly that workers were paid twice a day and given breaks to spend their wages before they became worthless! By Nov. 1923, one US dollar was worth a trillion German papiermarks, and people used wheelbarrows to carry their money! Many lost everything they had worked their whole lives to save.
