The Lightning Network (LN) was created in response to scalability issues with Bitcoin, specifically the speed and cost of Bitcoin transactions. The LN is a layer-2 solution built on top the primary Bitcoin blockchain. By increasing the speed and lowering the cost of a transaction it allows Bitcoin to be used for everyday transactions such as buying a cup of coffee, or �micro transactions� like a few cents to read an online news article.
