Federal Reserve

The Federal Reserve system (also known as the Fed) is the United States of America's central banking system. Surprisingly the Fed is not government-owned, but rather a private bank with significant government oversight. The Federal Reserve Act of 1913 effectively outsourced US currency to a group of private bankers, and was signed alongside the IRS Act under President Woodrow Wilson. Thus began the process of converting the value of the US dollar from the gold standard to arbitrary fiat currency. We are now beholden to a system that places control of an immeasurably complex economy in the hands of a few powerful individuals.
