Base Set (Shadowless) is a Pokémon TCG set of 102 cards across 205 variants, released January 9, 1999.
The early prints of Base Set, both the 1st Edition run and the Shadowless Unlimited run that followed it, before the drop shadow was added to the art frame. A 1st Edition card carries the black Edition 1 stamp at the bottom left, just below the art box, and every English 1st Edition Base Set card is shadowless. To recognise a Shadowless card, look for no drop shadow along the right and bottom edges of the art frame, a thinner HP and name typeface, brighter colours, and a copyright line that lists 99 among the Nintendo years so that 1999 appears twice; Unlimited drops that 99. Energy and Trainer cards have no art frame, so the copyright line is the tell for them. Machamp from the 2-Player Starter Set always carries the 1st Edition stamp, whatever the print run. Set code BS.
